Categories and Text from Original IPCR Discussion Forum
(which were not included in Discussion Forum restructuring, carried out 3/23/12)
These categories were included in the original format for the IPCR Discussion Forum. On 3/23/12 a restructuring of the IPCR Discussion Forum was made, to reduce the number of categories, and draw attention to one Open Discusson category. These categories (and their descriptive text) were not included in the updated version of the IPCR Discussion Forum.
Hopefully emphasizing an Open Discussion category will help visitors and members to feel that their contributions—regardless of whether they are directly related to IPCR documents or ideas—are essential to the “organic process” of creating a Discussion Forum which is a lively, inspiring, and respectful exchange of ideas and resources.
1. Frequently Asked Questions
As this Discussion Forum becomes a more useful and active learning environment, the same questions may arise many different newcomers. As these questions are identified, they will be listed here—with answers by an administrator—or whoever has the best answers.
2. The "1000Communities2" Proposal ("1000CommunitiesSquared")
A key proposal of The IPCR Initiative, which advocates for a combination Community Visioning Initiatives, "Community Teaching and Learning Centers" with ongoing workshops, and "sister community" relationships as a way of generating an exponential increase in our collective capacity to overcome the challenges of our times. A brief summary of the proposal is offered, and participants are invited to contribute comments, suggestions, discussion, etc to help make the proposal more effective—or to outline a different kind of proposal which might work better at overcoming or minimizing the critical challenges mentioned above.
3. The IPCR Journal/Newsletter (Winter 2010-2011 issue)
The IPCR Journal/Newsletter (Winter 2010-2011 issue; 58 pages) includes: a) an 11 page introduction to The IPCR Initiative (“Creating a Multiplier Effect of a Positive Nature”) b) a 15 step outline for Community Visioning Initiatives c) 8 sample questions for a preliminary survey d) a list of 117 related fields of activity e) an introduction to the concept “Peace Returned on Resources Invested” f) a 9 page section titled “A Call to Women’s Organizations Associated with Peacebuilding and Philanthropy” g) a section describing opportunities for local newspapers to contribute valuable community service—and thus contains enough detail associated with the IPCR peacebuilding approach to be a valuable starting point for brainstorming sessions, exploratory meetings, and workshops associated with planning and implementing a Community Visioning Initiative. Participants in this Discussion Forum are especially encouraged to glance through the 11 page introduction (mentioned above)—and to comment on the strengths and weaknesses of this 58 page document as an overview of a comprehensive approach for overcoming the critical challenges mentioned above. (There is a sticky post in this section which has a pdf file of this “Winter issue” document attached to it.)
4. The Eight IPCR Concepts
The document “Brief Descriptions of The Eight IPCR Concepts” is referenced here as a starting point for discussion. The Eight IPCR Concepts are offered as an example of a “constellation” of initiatives approach to overcoming or minimizing the critical challenges mentioned above. There are eight sections corresponding with the Eight IPCR Concepts, and participants are invited to contribute comments, suggestions, discussion, etc. to assist in clarifying and applying these concepts, or to assist in recognizing other concepts which might be equally important in such a “constellation” of initiatives.
5. A Mini Questionnaire from The IPCR Initiative
[Note: These questions also appeared in The IPCR Journal/Newsletter (Winter 2010-2011 issue).] There are 10 sections corresponding to the 10 questions, and participants are invited to answer some or all of the questions. Other sections can be provided for discussing what kind of conclusions can be drawn from answers provided, what other questions might be useful and practical as part of a preliminary survey (to 150 key community leaders)(in preparation for carrying out a Community Visioning Initiative), etc
6. Community Visioning Initiatives
This is a key IPCR concept, and this area of the discussion forum can become a clearinghouse for model projects and best practices. An overview of the kind of Community Visioning Initiatives advocated by The IPCR Initiative will be offered—however, this discussion forum category is meant to assist in developing every kind of visioning practices which will help overcome or minimize the critical challenges mentioned above. Therefore, moderators will encourage and support discussion of any and all forms of visioning directed towards resolving critical challenges.
7. "Community Teaching and Learning Centers"
This concept was created by the “Teachers Without Borders” organization—and has been modified and expanded by The IPCR Initiative so that these centers can be local community points of entry, information and resource clearinghouses, meeting places, locations for workshops and the development of “teacher-leaders”, and support sites for Community Visioning Initiatives. This area of the discussion forum can become a clearinghouse for model projects and best practices associated with the IPCR format for "Community Teaching and Learning Centers".
8. "Sister Community" Relationships
People can learn much from the “Sister Cities International” website about this concept—and there can be direct collaboration between The IPCR Initiative and “Sister Cities International”, if they are interested. However, The IPCR Initiative will give emphasis to “sister community” relationships between communities with the resources to assist other communities where there have been well documented calls for assistance with basic human needs—and on “sister community” relationships which are actively working to overcome or minimize the critical challenges mentioned above.
9. 117 Related Fields of Activity
On the IPCR Initiative homepage, there is a navigation category called “117 Related Fields of Activity”. In this section, the list of 117 fields of activity related to peacebuilding, community revitalization, and ecological sustainability will be provided—and participants are invited to modify those, and brainstorm on others which are equally or even more essential to overcoming or minimizing the critical challenges mentioned above.
10. Open Topic
One of the main goals of this IPCR Discussion Forum is to provide an active learning environment relevant to overcoming the critical challenges mentioned above—and relevant to making best use of the tools and resources which prove essential to that task. It seems likely, however—given the unprecedented nature of the challenges ahead—that, through thoughtful and considerate discussion, other critical challenges will rise to the top of member interest, and other tools and resources will rise to the top of member interest. Here is one place dedicated to encouraging discussion of ideas and resources which might not come up in the other sections.
11. Fair Use, Creative Commons, Open Source, and the IPCR Resource Sharing Policy
The IPCR Resource Sharing Policy states that—due to an urgent need for collaboration between diverse communities of people—all IPCR documents and resources are accessible for free. Here is a place to discuss when different levels of ownership and use (copyright, fair use, creative commons, open source, etc. ) are appropriate.
12. Moderators
There will be a need for moderators of each of the sections above. Participants who would like to moderate one or more of the sections above are asked to contact Stefan Pasti, Founder and Outreach Coordinator of The IPCR Initiative (at stefanpasti@ipcri.net ) . Many thanks for your interest in this area.
